چکیده

Cartoon-like images, i.e., C functions which are smooth apart from a C discontinuity curve, have by now become a standard model for measuring sparse (non-linear) approximation properties of directional representation systems. It was already shown that curvelets, contourlets, as well as shearlets do exhibit (almost) optimally sparse approximations within this model. However, all those results are only applicable to band-limited generators, whereas, in particular, spatially compactly supported generators are of uttermost importance for applications. In this paper, we now present the first complete proof of (almost) optimally sparse approximations of cartoon-like images by using a particular class of directional representation systems, which indeed consists of compactly supported elements. This class will be chosen as a subset of shearlet frames – not necessarily required to be tight – with shearlet generators having compact support and satisfying some weak moment conditions.

Introduction to Shearlets

Shearlets emerged in recent years among the most successful frameworks for the efficient representation of multidimensional data. Indeed, after it was recognized that traditional multiscale methods are not very efficient at capturing edges and other anisotropic features which frequently dominate multidimensional phenomena, several methods were introduced to overcome their limitations. The shear...

Compactly Supported Shearlets

Shearlet theory has become a central tool in analyzing and representing 2D data with anisotropic features. Shearlet systems are systems of functions generated by one single generator with parabolic scaling, shearing, and translation operators applied to it, in much the same way wavelet systems are dyadic scalings and translations of a single function, but including a precise control of directio...

Shearlets and Optimally Sparse Approximations

Multivariate functions are typically governed by anisotropic features such as edges in images or shock fronts in solutions of transport-dominated equations. One major goal both for the purpose of compression as well as for an efficient analysis is the provision of optimally sparse approximations of such functions. Recently, cartoon-like images were introduced in 2D and 3D as a suitable model cl...

Optimally Sparse Approximations of Multivariate Functions Using Compactly Supported Shearlet Frames

In this paper, we introduce pyramid-adapted shearlet systems for the three-dimensional setting, and show how one can construct frames for L(R) with this particular shearlet structure. We then introduce a generalized three-dimensional cartoon-like image model class of piecewise C smooth functions with discontinuities on a C smooth surface with 1 < α ≤ 2 and show that pyramid-adapted shearlet sys...

Parabolic Molecules

Anisotropic decompositions using representation systems based on parabolic scaling such as curvelets or shearlets have recently attracted significantly increased attention due to the fact that they were shown to provide optimally sparse approximations of functions exhibiting singularities on lower dimensional embedded manifolds. The literature now contains various direct proofs of this fact and...
